The Impact of the PCK1 Gene and PPCK1 Promoter Polymorphism 232C→G on the Incidence of TIIDM in Oji-Cree Natives of Ontario

The reported incidence of Type II Diabetes Mellitus (TIIDM) in Oji-Cree Natives is the highest in the world. This poster presents the impact of the PCK1 gene on TIIDM incidence in Oji-Cree Natives with particular attention to the role of SNP 232C→G on the transcription rate of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinease (PPCK1).

A Novel 10 Layer Flask For use in the SelecT Automated Cell Culture System

The new Corning HYPERFlask vessel is designed and optimized to increase cell yield using the SelecT Automated Cell Culture System. Importantly, cell densities per unit growth area are similar to traditional single vessels resulting in approximately ten times the cell yield as traditional cell culture vessels in the same footprint. The cells grown in the HYPERFlask perform exceptionally well in cell based assays.

An Emerging Revolution in Automated 3D Cell Culture

Market pressure exists for new paradigms to meet the demands for more rapid and reproducible cell production to keep up with advances in cell-based assays used in drug discovery and development. Novel automation platforms enable high productivity on three dimensional surfaces.

The Effect of Microwell size and Inoculation Density on the Automated Processing of Stem Cells

The work presented in this poster covers the investigation of key parameters for the expansion of stem cells in an automated micro-well format. The effect of inoculation seeding density (ICD), well size, passage number and feeding strategies on the proliferation of human mesenchymal stromal cells (hMSC) was investigated. In parallel the effect of well size and seeding density on the proliferation of mouse embryonic stem (mES) cells was also examined.

Identification of Chemokines and Cytokines Involved in the Migration of MSC to Bone Marrow as Well as to Damaged Tissues

Recent in vivo studies have demonstrated that transplanted MSC in mice were able to migrate into various tissues including lung, brain, bone marrow, heart and many others. Nevertheless, mechanisms responsible for the MSC migration remain unclear.

Combined Immune Parameters and X-ray data in Early Prediction of Anti-Tuberculosis Chemotherapy Response

20 tuberculosis (12 slow-responders and 8 fast responders) patients were treated with directly observed short course anti-tuberculosis chemotherapy. Chest X-ray was performed. sICAM-1 and suPAR were measured in serum by ELISA, TNFRs using the luminex technology. General discrimination analysis on selected analytes gave, 91.66% and 87,50% correctly classify fast responders and slow responder respectively. The support vector machine analysis gave 100% correct classification.

DNA Microarrays for Microbiological Diagnosis in Stem Cell Cultures

In stem cell cultures there is the possibility of infectious disease transmission to the recipients. Any microbial contamination of the donor`s biological products or introduced during the manufacturing process can potentially present a serious hazard to the recipients. The majority of potential contaminants are mycoplasma and other bacterias, yeasts and fungi. Moreover, viral and prion contamination of cell cultures and “feeder” cells is also a common risk.

In vitro Differentiation of Human Bone Marrow-Derived Mesenchymal Stem Cells Towards the Osteoblast Lineage. A Model to Study the Effects of Cancer Cells on Bone Formation

This poster describes an in vitro model of DAG-induced osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem using various osteoblastic markers. Human MSC should constitute a useful in vitro tool to the effects of osteotropic cancer cells on osteoblast differentiation and to better understand the inhibition of normal formation during the process of tumor-induced osteolysis.

Microbiological Control in a Stem Cell Bank: Standardisation

The transplant of cells of human origin is a sector of medicine which shows a high increase and which entails great opportunities for treatment of certain diseases. Stem cell banks should assure the quality, the traceability and the safety of cultures in order to avoid transmission of disease.

Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Coming of Age?

The effects of aging on human mesenchymal stem cells, (MSC) were investigated. MSC were isolated from patients of different ages and the different parameters of aging were measured either immediately after isolation or after long-term cultivation in vitro. Markers of senescence were investigated, including p21, p53 and beta-galactosidase levels. Antioxidative defense capacity of the MSC were tested together with markers of oxidative damage and antioxidative enzyme activities.
